Carbisdale, Second Battle of
Carbisdale in Sutherland was the site of the last battle, fought in 1650, between the Covenanters and the Duke of Montrose’s Royalists, which the latter lost. Unfortunately it is now threatened by a minor development, vigorously opposed by local people and historians.

I grew up down the Strath from Culrain, and we were always told that the site of the battle was protected by a curse - especially the copse of trees where Montrose is alleged to have hidden his gold. I also know the formidable Gen Houston who is leading the charge against the development - the developers don't stand a chance!

Thanks for the local background. The nearest I have been to this area is the Black Isle. I am trying to keep up with all these heritage issues, so if there are any further developments I would certainly be interested in learning about them.
Also good luck with your excellent blog!

This development is not on the site of the last battle of Montrose, an English incomer tries to use this argument to keep local people from building near his own property.
The real battlefield is on fields below this site.
