Laser Surface Authentication (LSA)
Nanotechnology has come up with a clever, simple (and potentially cheap) method for validating documents such as passports, which avoids the problems that go with biometrics etc. It’s called Laser Surface Authentication (LSA).

Can't help thinking... wouldn't it be great if they could apply all this clever technology to something a little more... well, important. Like world hunger. I already know who I am. And I have a driving licence, passport, birth certificate, and household bills to prove it...

Yes, but with all due respect this technology is likely to save money and make more expensive ones unnecessary. One problem with the government ID card scheme, as we know, is that it is hugely expensive. As for moving the money on to more worthwhile things . . . that's another problem!
