Trouble at VisitScotland

Am I alone in thinking that VisitScotland is a silly name? What is wrong with calling a tourist board a tourist board? Not only that, but the area tourist boards are now called ‘hubs’. Why the desperate re-branding?

Numbers of overseas visitors were down 20 per cent between 1998 and 2003, and the Scotsman is now describing clashes between boardroom personalities.

Wouldn’t it better to look at what is going wrong, rather than change the signs on the doors? What are the main problems? Is it the cost of air connections? The prices and standards of accommodation and food? The lack of foreign language services? The relative dullness of festivals and special events?

Maybe it’s time to look at the basic state of Scotland’s largest industry.

One small suggestion as to what might be the problem; the Scots.

I have visited Scotland regularly over the years and I love the place. I have travelled all over the world and, apart from New Mexico, I don't think there are any more beautiful landscapes. I love to cruise through the glens in my convertible, savouring both wild nature and the open road.

On every visit, however, there is at least one "nasty moment" when a Scot feels the need to put a visiting Englishmen in his place - i.e. in his opinion, somewhere below an earthworm in the great order of Nature. Whether he's right or wrong is not to debate here; he's certainly not promoting tourism.

Seriously, I think the relationship between England and Scotland is one of unrequited love. We tried to bury the hatchet. You keep waving it in our face. Continued attempts to keep this kingdom united are as degrading as stalking an old girlfriend.

I look forward to visiting an independent Scotland. Without all the subsidies from South of the Border (both directly and via Brussels) I expect a warmer reception - albeit through gritted teeth.

Why the desperate re-branding?
I don't think the re-branding is desperate: it's just part of the process. There are several large organisations in Scotland which seem to thrive on branding, rebranding, buzzwording, froth and lack of beer. Careers Scotland & Learning Teaching Scotland are another two that spring to mind.. You're right, ditch them and start again with competent people. But where you going to find them??
